So I'm always down for cute lesbian romance and putting it in a Hollywood setting was super cool because it ties into the whole visibility thing, and the characters were pretty down to earth most of the time. It gets three stars for a few reasons:1. while the book does use the word "bisexual" it also uses "sometimes lesbian" and "so bohemian" to describe someone who dates men and women.2. A character low key slut shames by saying she's not "that kind" (in italics) of girl who sleeps with someone on the first date.3. A character uses "retarded" on several occasions."4. Sometimes it was hard to remember what character was who - they didn't have two distinct voices.5. My biggest complaint that goes through the entire book is while I get that having a crush - especially a forbidden one - is really overwhelming and can be all you think about, this book basically goes "she walked across the room, it was hot. She smiled at me and I went weak. She is sweating and it's so cute. She's looking out the window and I want her." And it really made it hard for me to focus on the story because I was so busy being told how hot and bothered the character whose POV we were in was practically every sentence.So yeah. Had a lot of potential and could have been really good, but there was so much biphobia and general homophobia in it and while I get a lot of that is internalized, the character who used those words doesn't learn by the end of the book, and that means the problematic aspects extend to the author. At its very core, The Gravity Between Us is a love story between two individuals who have been best friends from the time they were children. Kendall Bettencourt and Payton Taylor know almost everything about each other...except the fact that Payton is a lesbian. Once Payton shares this with Kendall, she is accepted with open arms by her best friend but then Payton begins to realize that her feelings for Kendall go beyond being "just" best friends. Aside from the crazy life she leads as one of Hollywood's latest ingenues, Kendall starts to wonder about her own sexuality and her feelings towards Payton but will acknowledging both cost her everything she's worked so hard for?Payton and Kendall have a beautiful friendship, becoming the tried and tested anchors to one another's lives. They obviously love each other but falling in love is something that both think may be risky, possibly costing them their friendship should their feelings not be reciprocated. There are moments where you forget that they are as young as they are, what with Payton being quite mature in thinking and Kendall living an independent life in Los Angeles.The supporting cast of characters are just as unforgettable as the leads. They are more than decorative, with most of them providing sense when both Payton and Kendall find themselves at a crossroads in their relationship.The Gravity Between Us is one of my all-time favorite reads and, if this is just an inkling of how talented a writer Zimmer is, I can't wait to see what else she'll come up with in her future endeavors.
