Really like this series and was looking forward to #3. The entire thing is like a hardcore NC-17 Harry Potter as we’re following these characters from very early adolescence to young adulthood and experiencing all the pitfalls and traumas in between. The interesting dichotomy is that they are a sexually liberated sect isolated from an obviously otherwise puritanical and male dominated world that we get small glimpses of as well. The relationships between the characters are strong and diverse and the sex runs the gamut between lovely, passionate, and clinically educational and involves almost every imaginable pairing. There are times when it is redundant about the character’s continuing inner struggles, entire chapters repeating the same self doubts and insecurities sometimes three or four different times, which means you really have to be invested. Don’t know how many books are planned but I would’ve loved to have seen more Zeal and less of the repeaters (or the specifics of fight club or grappling class for that matter). My opinion is that Ms Hadley just loves these characters so much and is so personally invested that sometimes she gets too deep and involved. A strong editing hand for repetitive content would help keep the story moving better but I understand that some readers disagree and like a lot of in-depth psychological deep diving. Well you definitely get that. But I’m of the mind that too much of a good thing is still too much and there were times (especially in the first half of the book) the story dragged and suffered for it. That being said, I will absolutely be reading whatever comes next because the writing is otherwise strong and the meat of the story engaging. All hail Zeal! I hope they win and a lot of comeuppance is in store. Auryn Hadley is one of my favourite writers one of the reasons is that I love how her stories are always centered around powerfull women, eventhough it is not always in ways you would normally picture them.In this series it is centered around Nari who is Chosen to lead the priests and people back to the actual faith. What I have noticed in almost all of Auryn Hadley's series, is a social commentary aspect through here storytelling. It is not overt, but it is there and it is something that I appreciate, because it is thought provoking. It makes people think, but doesnot detract from the storyline whatsover, it adds another much needed demonsion to it.I have pre-ordered the entire series after reading the first book and I have not been dissapointed as of yet.
